The Introduction

Introducing the rite

Bless God, O my soul.

And all that is within me bless God’s holy name.

Jesus says: I have come that you may have life, and have it in all its fullness.

The Decision

Turning from evil to Christ

The Christian life means turning from evil and turning to Christ. Answering for this child, as they stand now with Christ: do you renounce evil?

{Godparents} I renounce evil.

Answering for this child, as they seek now to follow him: do you turn to Christ?

{Godparents} I turn to Christ.

Signing with Oil of the Catechumens

Christ claims you for his own. Receive the sign of his Cross.

The Baptism

Baptising in the name of the the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit

Heavenly Father, bless this water, that whoever is washed in it may be made one with Christ in the fellowship of your Church, and be brought through every tribulation to share the risen life that is ours in Jesus Christ our Saviour.

Amen.

N & N, what name do you give this child?

{Parents} NNN

Baptising with water

NNN, I baptise you in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

Amen.

The Anointing

Celebrating the seal of the Holy Spirit

NNN, for you Jesus Christ came into the world; for you he lived and showed God’s love; for you he suffered death on the Cross; for you he triumphed over death, rising to newness of life; for you he prays at God’s right hand: all this for you before you could know anything of it. In your Baptism the words of scripture are fulfilled: ‘We love, because God first loved us.’

Anointing with the Oil of Chrism

You are now sealed by the Holy Spirit in Baptism and held in Christ’s love for ever.

Amen.

The Conclusion

Concluding the rite

NNN, may the Spirit of God be in you, wisdom and understanding keep you, the power of God encircle you, and God’s truth lead you into freedom, now and forever.

Amen.

Go in the peace of Christ.

Thanks be to God
