As quiet as a leaf

Psalm 143;1 Samuel 8; Luke 21:29-end

We need kings to rule over us —

Donald Trump

Brexit

Love Island

The World Cup

Facebook

Netflix.

We need kings to rule over us —

over our fears

our selfishness

our boredom

our inattention

our superficiality

our lust.

But always somewhere

as quiet as a leaf opening on a fig tree

your kingdom breaks through —

at a bedside

on the phone

in the office —

some kindness

a touch

our forgiveness.

So often like the Israelites

shouting for a king of our sins,

make us today like Jesus

praying on the Mount of Olives —

waiting

to hear the opening of a leaf.
